The new unit is built on a Navistar 7500 four door cab and chassis that is powered by way of a 350 horsepower MaxxForce 10 engine. For safety, the chassis features the highest recommended solution for meeting the NFPA compliant stability requirement by having the Bendix Automatic Traction Control with Electronic Stability Control (ATC/ESC) for controlling both the lateral braking and throttle control in case of a skid situation. For seating, there are four (4) SCBA seats in the cab with NFPA compliant seating plus an air ride driver’s seat.
For fire suppression, there is a Hale QMax 1500 GPM midship pump with two (2) speedlay preconnects with slide-out hose packing trays, a 2-1/2” front bumper discharge as well as side pump panel and hose bed discharges. This pump system is supplemented by a Hale Model 2.1 electronic injection type foam system and 25 gallon Class-A foam tank plumbed to selected discharges.
For supplying the fire pump, there is a 1000 gallon water tank that can be quickly refilled with the 3” x 2-1/2” Fireman Friend direct tank fill.
For optimum response and on-scene protection, there is a high output Whelen LED warning light system including a directional light bar on the rear. Audible warning includes emergency air horns, Power Call 200 watt electronic siren and speakers, and a Federal Q2B mechanical siren. These and the other added body electrical devices are activated and controlled thru the Navistar Diamond Logic multiplexed electrical system for ease of service without having redundant electrical wiring added by the body builder.
For scene safety there is an Onan 15KW hydraulic generator, electric rewind cord reel, two (2) removable tripod lights, and a 6000 watt vertical extension type Wilburt light tower. For safety on approach to a scene, there is a 300 watt 12 volt HID brow light on the cab roof.
The all aluminum rescue style apparatus body features numerous side and rear compartments for equipment and tool storage as well as a full width primary hose bed area of over 100 cubic feet for supply hose. An enclosed ladder / pike pole tunnel thru the water tank permits ease access to the ground ladders from the rear of the unit. In addition, there are two enclosed storage compartments for 6” x 10’ hard suction hoses. In the body fender areas, there are three (3) compartments for storage of a total of nine air cylinders and an additional area for a slide-out 60 pound Sta-Dri hopper with top fill and bottom outlet. For potential extrication work, there are winch receivers on the sides, front, and rear of the body for use with a portable style electric winch.
The KME body was completed with customized shelving, trays, tool boards, etc. within in the body compartments for mounting of the fire department’s engine equipment.
The Bacon District Vol. Fire Department provides first alarm coverage to the lower Charlotte county area as well as mutual aid into both Mecklenburg and Halifax counties. In addition to fire suppression, EMS First Responder service is also provided to these same jurisdictions.
This KME apparatus was sold by Calvin (Sput) Jones of Slagle Fire Equipment Co. in South Boston, Va.
